San Sebastian

San-Sebastian-21

San Sebastian was quite a gem of a place and being a little bit tricky to get to, it has a wonderful secluded feeling.   We spent a long weekend here and as far as food goes…it was WAY up there!

La Concha beach is the star of the show in San Sebastian.  A perfect Conch shell shaped beach (which you could probably guess from the name) lined with old timey boardwalk buildings.

In addition to the beaches there are nice hikes to do as well.  This trip was a top in my book.  A quaint seaside town, great food, great wine and leisurely days…doesn’t get much better than that!

In addition to eating your way through San Sebastian and getting some sun, there are crazy beautiful sculptures all over the city.  Our favorite was Peinie Del Viento by Eduardo Chilliada.  We woke up before sunrise on our last day there to hopefully get a dreamy shot of sunrise with the sculpture and no crowds.  However, when we arrived the path was fenced off.  A few days earlier a landslide had occurred blocking the path.  Since no one was around, we put on our “fence hopping shoes” and scurried out to grab our photo.  There was no way we were going all the way to San Sebastian, waking up at 4:30am for the perfect photo and then MISSING the opportunity!  We grabbed a few beauties before anyone knew we were there.

Getting There:  Flight from Stanstead Airport in London to Bilbao then a bus from Bilbao into San Sebastian.  The bus ride was over an hour, but it was quite cheap and easy.

Accommodations:  If you want to stay in the heart of San Sebastian near the beach it is quite pricey.  We used AirBNB for this reason and got an excellent apartment in a perfect location at a fraction of the cost.

Restaurants:  Honestly, you can’t go wrong here.  We didn’t do the fanciest places (there are lots of Michelin stars here!) because we booked late, but there were countless places we walked into – just to have a few pintxos here and there and you couldn’t go wrong.  The food is unbelievable.  We did however have a special dinner at Rekondo.  We are wine lovers and the wine list was maybe the best we have ever seen and for absolutely dirt-cheap prices.  The food was good – not excellent – but the wine and atmosphere more than made up for that.
